Hello, Autumn | Makers Blog Hop

Hello, Autumn | Makers Blog Hop

What do crisp leaves, hoodies, scarves, and gorgeous boots have in common? Autumn. They all come out when the weather starts to change. Fall has always been my favorite season maybe because I’m a September baby or because I’m originally from the Midwest and it’s such a beautiful time of year. No matter how you feel about cooler weather you have to admit that fall fashion is beautiful.

If you’re a fashionista or a crafter, you want to follow along with the Mad Makers as we showcase the newest trends for Fall. From September 25th to October 30th, two Makers will feature their Fabulous Fall Products. You can make sure you’re following everyone here Facebook, Twitter or G+, or check the bottom of this post to see who’s scheduled when and their links.

If you haven’t been over to Hook Smart recently, here are some of my new items and a few old favorites for fall.

What Designs Should I Add Next?

Anybody out there? I know it’s been a while since I posted, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still creating. If you follow me on Instagram you know that I’m in spring/summer creation mode, but still keeping my eyes focuses on fall/winter fashion as well.

I’m sure I speak for most fiber artists when I say that sometimes we can be pattern hoarders. I have a ridiculous number of crochet patterns in my Ravelry library right now and I’m working on deciding what I should work on next to add to the shop. Since I suck at picking my next project, I thought I’d ask you all what you think.

What designs should I add next?

The Butterfly Poncho by Sincerely Pam or The Slammer Sweater by Sans Limites Crochet

The Robot Ragdoll by A la Sascha or Kepler the Lion by Fresh Stitches

RobotRagdol Kepler the Lion

Rayna’s Wrap by Cuddlepie Crochet  or The Philomena Shawlette by Fiber Flux

Let me know in the comments which three you’d like to see in the shop in the next few months…

September: Fall and Birthday Celebrations

September is one of my favorite months and not just because it’s my birthday month, but because it means fall is on the way. I’m from the Midwest, so I love Fall, but now that I live in the South it takes Fall a little longer to show itself. So, even though it’s still 90 degrees here I’m still celebrating Fall.

Last year’s pumpkin patch visit.

Soon we’ll be at the pumpkin patch and going on a hay ride. We’ll have lots of delicious soups and it won’t be too hot outside to play. Oh and I can finally wear all the cool hats I’ve made for myself.

I decided to celebrate my birthday on the Hook Smart FB page with daily trivia questions to win shop credit and special Friday flash sales. I usually post the trivia questions at noon, but the flash sales times vary, so be on the lookout.

I’m also participating in a scavenger hunt activity with The Mad Mad Makers on FB, so keep your eyes peeled this afternoon for chances to win.

What’s your favorite season?

Things I Want… Yes again…

I haven’t done a wish list in a while and I still have things on the last one that I’m craving, but I swear every time I turn around I see a new crafting thing that I NEED… okay want, but it feels like a serious need.

First up these crochet lite hooks, they have a LIGHT in them. Do you know how helpful that would be when working with dark yarn or once the sun sets and I don’t want to turn on the bright lights in the living room?

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I recently tried to make my own buttons and now I’m obsessed with using clay. I want to try a lot of different colors, plus I have a bunch of the different clay tools on my to do list as well.

I’ve seen some GORGEOUS patterns using Red Heart Boutique Swanky and I have to try it out.

And while I’m talking about yarn let’s add Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable to the list as well.

I have a birthday coming up, so here’s hoping that my family and friends buy me gift cards to Michaels, Joann’s, and Amazon.

What’s on your wish list?

August Item of the Month: Cotton Beautiful Things Slouchy Hat

It’s a new month and that means a new item needs to be chosen for item of the month. A few months ago, I had a request to add more cotton options to the store because some people are allergic to acrylic just like I’m allergic to wool. I took that request to heart and so far I’ve added two cotton hat options and I’m working on adding scarf options as well.

So, this month’s item of the month is the Beautiful Things Slouchy Hat made with a 100% cotton yarn. It comes in a variety of colors and is featured here in hot green. The hat usually retails for $27, but it will be $24 all month long. If you’re still experiencing warmer temperatures like we are in Georgia, this cotton slouch works for all weather.

Back to School Sale…

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but we’re a house of educators. My husband teaches technology for grades K-5 and I teach freshman composition at the university where I’m working on my PhD. For as long as I can remember, I have LOVED back to school sales. Yes, I was the nerd who couldn’t wait to get new pens, pencils, notebooks, and crayons. Even though our son is too young for school, I still grabbed a couple boxes of crayons and some glue for our at home learning sessions, plus some notebooks and pens for me. I’m seriously addicted to buying new notebooks. I should take a picture of my collection one day.

Anyway, now that I crochet all the back to school sales remind me that fall is indeed coming and that means busy season for all the yarn lovers. I decided to prepare for the busy season with a back to school sale of my own. I recently uploaded tons of new custom options to Etsy and all you have to do is use coupon BTS2014 at checkout to save 15%. I haven’t decided when to end the sale, but I’m thinking August 1st will be the last day. I know it might seem early, but handmade purchases take time and if you order now you’ll have your items in time for fall.

If you’re a football fan, I recommend checking out the team spirit cowl or purchasing the color block bulky cowl and headband set in your favorite team’s colors.

Frozen Addicted…

So, I FINALLY saw Frozen a few weeks ago when I went home for my brother’s high school graduation, and I ended up watching it three times in a 24 hour span. I’m a huge Disney fan, so I knew I would like it, but I’m freaking obsessed now. Comcast recently added it to on demand and of course I’ve watched it a bunch of times since then with the tiny human.

A few days ago I started working on a new scarf and headband for my Etsy shop, and without realizing it I ended up choosing a color scheme from the movie. I didn’t realize it until I finished everything and I was watching “Let It Go” on YouTube per the kid’s request. Of course my husband teased me about it, but I think it turned out great.

Now I think I need to create sets with all the other Disney princesses in mind. What colors would your favorite Disney princess wear?

I’ll be adding a custom listing to the shop for these items and a ton more over the next few days.

Patterns for the cowl and headband can be found on Facebook via Cre8tion Crochet and Playin’ Hooky Designs respectfully.

Summer Vacation and Ready to Ship

Summer is officially here and that means it’s road trip time. I’ll be heading out of town next week for my annual Midwest vacation. This means the Etsy shop will be on vacation on Monday and that I’ll come back with new fall/winter custom item options.

If you can’t wait until then, check out my current ready to ship sale on Etsy and order before I leave.

Here are a few customer favorites:

Super slouch hat in Iris

Braided headband in Blue Mint

Super Slouch Hat in Blackberry

And a couple new items:

Coffee Sleeve set

Bows on Bobby Pins in Blue Mint

I’m working on a few tank tops to wear while on vacay, so I’ll try to blog, but make sure you’re following on Instagram and Facebook for faster updates.

June Item of the Month: Lace Crochet Kindle Cases

Lace Crochet Kindle Case in Blue Mint and Heather Gray

I’ve decided to start doing items of the month for the remainder of the year. This month’s item of the month is a relatively new item to the shop, Lace Crochet Kindle/Nook cases.

Lace Crochet Kindle Case in Strawberry and Lemon Meringue

I resisted the electronic reader movement initially, but when I finished my Master’s Degree in 2010 my parents bought me a kindle as my graduation present. My mom knew I had been considering it, but felt like hey real books are better. Her argument was I would finally have more room in my suitcase when I came to visit if I didn’t have to pack so many books to read with me. Here we are four years later and I’m still in love with it. So many of my nerdy friends have switched to electronic books for travel purposes and one of the first things people asked me about making was cases for them. I’ve been really into lace lately, so I chose a pattern that featured lace in it for this case. Don’t worry I’ll have a more simplistic version in the near future.

Inside view of the case

Here are the details on the case:

Let your e-reader stand out from the crowd with this hand crocheted case that includes a detailed lace covering. Each case features two layers that allows you to not only mix colors, but it also gives your reader some extra stability. You will choose two colors for your case, the first being the inside layer and the second your lace overlay color. It is crocheted with a soft 100% acrylic yarn and comes in a variety of options. The inside features a pocket to keep your reader snug and you shut it with the included tie for extra security.

The case will fit a standard e-reader measuring 6.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide.

Cases normally retail for $25, but you can get it this month for $22.50 (a 10% savings).

If you crochet and you’re interested in the pattern, you can find it here: Lace Crochet E-Reader pattern

Crochet Wish List…

So, yea I haven’t posted in a while, but I’m back and really going to try and work on posting at least once a week. I’m busy working on items to add for summer to the shop, but in the midst of making these items I’m accumulating quite the crafting wish list.

Here are a few of the things I’m pining over from Knit Picks site:

1. Knitting Yarn Ball Winder

One of my projects this summer is to finally get my office/craft room in better order and this ball winder is going to be a must.

2. A crochet hook case not necessarily this one, but one like it.

3. Pretty much all their yarn, but their Comfy Worsted is first on my list. It’s 75% cotton and 25% acrylic. I’m imagining amazing scarves that will be wearable during all seasons.

What’s on your crafting wish list right now?
